The Q3 2023 Global Risk Survey by Oxford Economics confirms geopolitical tensions related to Taiwan, Korea, and Russia-NATO are now believed to pose the greatest risk to the global economy and banking system in the near and medium term.1 Political events can disrupt operations and supply chains. Shifting foreign exchange rates and high cost of funds discourage credit demand and investor risk taking, dampening overall economic activity. Executives are aware of the urgent need to guard against risks and uncertainties. Based on SAS Institute’s study, 81% of executives believe that business resilience will reduce the impact of crises (88%) and increase market share by adapting to market conditions (87%).2

Building actionable contingency plans to manage operational disruption requires the right partners in both the physical and financial supply chains of the business — partners who share similar values and can be trusted in times of distress. In BDO Unibank, we pride ourselves in being the financial partner of choice.  By keeping our corporate clients front and center of all our services, we know the importance of our role in their financial supply chain.  Our Transaction Banking Group’s Cash Management Services team knows what it takes to offer the right level of products and services to keep businesses going.

BDO Cash Management Services provides real-time information and immediate funds availability to minimize supply chain interruptions. Cash inflows and outflows can be closely monitored via BDO Business Online Banking. This helps improve reconciliation and reduces the risk of late payment bookings, while optimizing and enhancing cash flow stability. Information services provide insights into cash flow forecasting, helping with working capital efficiency. By supplying timely and comprehensive information and improving cash flow, corporations can minimize their reliance on external financing and strategically plan for short, medium and long term funds allocation to improve overall profitability.

A robust financial management strategy is vital to resilience planning. It enables businesses to maintain strong liquidity and cash reserves especially during times of crisis. True to its service philosophy “We find ways,” BDO finds ways to provide the right solutions and accurate information integral in keeping the operations going. By knowing where the cash is and having easy and fast access for their payment needs, corporates can focus on the more critical and strategic activities during these challenging times.

Upgrading your assets: Your guide to investing in premium condominiums in the Philippines https://www.bworldonline.com/spotlight/2024/01/03/566583/upgrading-your-assets-your-guide-to-investing-in-premium-condominiums-in-the-philippines/ Wed, 03 Jan 2024 03:12:50 +0000 https://www.bworldonline.com/?p=566583 Investing in premium condominiums is not just about acquiring property; it’s a strategic move into a world of exceptional living. As the Philippine real estate market continues to evolve, discerning investors are turning their attention to the country’s upscale condo developments. In this article, we will walk you through the key considerations and strategic insights to help you make informed decisions as you embark on the journey of investing in premium condominiums.

  1. Location

Time has proven how the address of a property greatly impact the value of a development, especially condominiums. Proximity to urban hubs, major roads, and essential establishments are the major reasons that identify if a specific property is worth investing or not. Prime location like destination estates is a good example, one of which is Bridgetowne – an estate that houses major offices and establishments, including condominium properties like Le Pont Residences.

Bridgetowne Destination Estate (Artist’s Perspective)

Developed by RLC Residences, Le Pont Residences’ address provide the much need convenience to future investors, thanks to its strategic location within Bridgetowne. Future owners of this property are in for a guaranteed capital appreciation given its proximity to PEZA-accredited offices, soon-to-open Opus Mall, notable The Victor structure, and The Bridge designed by Philippine National Artist for Architecture Francisco Mañosa found within the estate. As the only township that connects Quezon City and Pasig and has direct access to both C5 Road and Amang Rodriguez Avenue, Le Pont Residences’ value has already increased by 5%, less than a year after its launch in January.

  1. Hyper-sized Amenities

Investing in premium condominiums is not just about securing a property; it’s about upgrading your lifestyle. High-end condo investors are always looking for the amenities available in the property – as these increase desirability of the property resulting in higher value appreciation in the coming years.

Le Pont Residences, for example, features hyper-sized, above-standard amenities that elevates the living experience of its future residents. Its indoor and outdoor facilities are spread out in multiple levels of the property, including the Infinity Pool located at the Clubhouse – a perfect spot that offers a beautiful view of the estate.

Aside from this, the property will have its own fitness facilities such as a gym equipped with state-of-the-art equipment and a Yoga Room. Recreational and socialization areas such as Private Theater, Private Function Room, and Sky Lounge will also be exclusively available to its residents.

  1. Generously-Spaced, Future-Ready Unit Offerings

Homes with roomy area and equipped with advanced technology redefines premium experiences in the condominium space. More than a spacious unit, these living spaces should come with unique features that enhance the quality of life, provide comfortability, and strengthen safety and convenience.

Le Pont Residences is proud to offer units with expansive living spaces – ranging from 1-bedroom flat at 46sqm. (495 sq. ft.) to bi-level penthouse with iconic curved staircase at 380sqm (4090 sq. ft.). All these units come with loggia – an extended living space that allows homeowners to have a relaxing space right inside the unit. In addition, smart home features will come built in all the units for added safety and comfort.

As this property is developed by RLC Residences, future investors can easily manage their own unit in this development via the industry’s first myRLC Home App. Downloadable via Google Playstore and Apple AppStore, myRLC Home allows easy condo investment management anytime, anywhere through in-app billing statements monitoring, online payment feature, and many more.

Metro Pacific Tollways Corporation wins big at ESGBusiness Awards https://www.bworldonline.com/spotlight/2023/12/29/566068/metro-pacific-tollways-corporation-wins-big-at-esgbusiness-awards/ Fri, 29 Dec 2023 08:32:22 +0000 https://www.bworldonline.com/?p=566068 Metro Pacific Tollways Corporation (MPTC) brought home two major titles at the recently held ESGBusiness Awards for its commitment to turning toll roads into ‘green highways,’ as well as the development of its web-based application My CG App.

MPTC’s vision of turning toll roads into ‘green highways’ sets a new standard for infrastructure projects in the Philippines. Through pioneering efforts, the company has seamlessly integrated energy-efficient and resource-saving technologies across its major expressways, including the Cavite-Laguna Expressway (CALAX), North Luzon Expressway (NLEX), and Cebu-Cordova Laguna Expressway (CCLEX). These initiatives have not only supported energy efficiency but have also upheld road safety standards.

Notably, existing toll plazas have been equipped with solar panels, providing power for their daytime operations, and LED fixtures illuminate the roadways, greatly enhancing energy efficiency. Meanwhile, rainwater catchment systems are installed in rest bays along the Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway (SCTEX) and in MPT South Hub, exemplifying MPTC’s commitment to reducing water consumption.

NLEX, MPT South, and CCLEX have also implemented greening and reforestation programmes that will significantly capture emissions through proper management and maintenance. NLEX has been planting trees along expressways to help curb greenhouse gas emissions.

In 2020, CCLEX was able to plant 66,561 mangrove seedlings with a survival rate of 65%. Similarly, MPT South, in partnership with government and non-government organisations, facilitated mangrove tree planting activities alongside the expressway in Paranaque.

In 2021, a remarkable milestone in MPTC’s sustainability journey is the LEED Gold Certification awarded to MPT South’s Headquarters in Imus, Cavite – the MPTSouth Hub. Its recreational facility, the MPT South Hive, was similarly awarded LEED certification the following year.

Recognising that its offices should also operate sustainably, solar panels totalling 1011.34kWp have been installed in the NLEX, MPTSouth, and CCLEX offices, which powers their daytime energy requirements. It also continues to install energy-efficient technologies like LED lighting fixtures and motion light sensors in all of its office locations.

“This comprehensive approach demonstrates MPTC’s dedication to sustainability, not only in its core projects but also in the broader scope of its operations, further solidifying its commitment to a more sustainable and eco-conscious future,” the company said.

Meanwhile, MPTC’s My CG App stands as a beacon of accountability, transparency, and good corporate governance practices.  This user-friendly platform empowers employees, officers, and consultants with easy access to crucial information related to corporate governance policies, practices, and core values.

The app also ensures that essential governance resources are readily available to all internal stakeholders and reinforces accountability by allowing users to report any ethical concerns or violations, further enhancing the company’s commitment to upholding the highest standards of integrity

Since the launch of the My CG App, it has garnered impressive user engagement. The majority of employees, officers, and consultants actively use the platform, especially when they need to submit an inquiry or submit a disclosure form.

The app has also played a pivotal role in promoting accountability and transparency. It has facilitated the disclosure of over 2,344 conflicts of interest-related reports, which have been appropriately managed, and helped prevent the appearance of corruption. It has also made governance-related information easily accessible.

“By consolidating governance resources into one comprehensive platform, the app streamlines processes, making it easier for employees to adhere to governance guidelines,” the company said.

It added that My CG App stands as a testament to MPTC’s commitment to good governance, transparency, and accountability, becoming an indispensable tool that empowers stakeholders with knowledge, fosters ethical behaviour, and reinforces corporate governance values.

In winning the Sustainable Infrastructure Award – Philippines and the Good Governance Award – Philippines category in the awards programme. ESGBusiness Awards honours businesses that demonstrate outstanding commitment and achievement in environmental, social, and governance (ESG) practices, as well as those leading the way in building a sustainable future.

With MPTC at the forefront of transformative initiatives in the tollways industry, stakeholders can be assured that their partnership aligns with a company deeply committed to responsible business practices, sustainability, and excellence in corporate governance. As MPTC continues to forge ahead, it sets a commendable standard for the industry and exemplifies the potential for positive change in the infrastructure sector.

A legacy of engineering excellence: MIESCOR celebrates five decades of exceptional service https://www.bworldonline.com/spotlight/2023/12/29/566054/a-legacy-of-engineering-excellence-miescor-celebrates-five-decades-of-exceptional-service/ Fri, 29 Dec 2023 07:50:10 +0000 https://www.bworldonline.com/?p=566054 The current business landscape in the Philippines has become more competitive over the years, compelling businesses to adopt an even more forward-looking approach to attain long-term stability and sustainability.

In achieving stability and longevity, companies recognize that beyond establishing and implementing good business strategies, they should also build a strong and skilled workforce to ensure effective execution and value creation for customers and stakeholders.

Meralco Industrial Engineering Services Corporation (MIESCOR) has triumphantly pieced together the elements needed to succeed in the engineering and construction industry.

The wholly owned subsidiary of Meralco has consistently demonstrated service excellence and engineering expertise as it celebrates its 50th year with Miescor Group’s 10,000-strong workforce.

From being Meralco’s Plant and Engineering Division, MIESCOR was incorporated in 1973 and was later spun off as the engineering and construction arm of Meralco. Since then, MIESCOR has become a top-notch company offering services on engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC), testing and commissioning, operation and maintenance (O&M), and logistics and facilities management to the power, water, telecommunications, transport, manpower, and infrastructure sectors.

Meralco Vice President and MIESCOR President and CEO Richard O. Ochava

“It is a great honor to lead MIESCOR in its 50th year in the industry. As we commemorate the company’s half a century’s legacy, we remain steadfast to our commitment and dedication to providing exemplary service to our customers and stakeholders. We are ready to face and turn the challenges that await us into opportunities of growth that will pave the way for new milestones for the company,” Meralco Vice President and MIESCOR President and Chief Executive Officer Richard O. Ochava said.

MIESCOR’S CORE BUSINESS

MIESCOR’s core business comprises units that specialize in Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC), Distribution Utility Services (DUS), Utility Attachment Management (UAM), Telecommunications Services (Telecoms), and Trading.

The EPC business unit ensures timely and safe completion of high-quality projects. It handles designing and supplying equipment and materials, and building facilities and infrastructure related to power, utilities, and transportation.

Among its recent projects were the recently energized 230kV and 500KV transmission lines in Zambales and the 500kV transmission line in Batangas, which help bring reliable power supply to the communities in the area.

THE FORCE BEHIND POWER. MIESCOR provides various services to distribution utility companies including Meralco, the country’s largest distribution utility company.

Meanwhile, through its DUS business unit, MIESCOR provides engineering design and technical services, facilities inspection and maintenance, meter reading, test and reseal, and other services vital to the operations of Meralco and other distribution utility companies.

In 2022, DUS launched its Anti-Obstruction of Power Lines (AOPL) service, a new business venture developed to assist Meralco in its implementation of the government’s Republic Act 11361 or the AOPL Act of 2019.

The UAM business unit ensures the safety and the integrity of Meralco facilities, which have foreign attachments like telecoms fiber optic cables and copper lines. It also provides fast evaluation of Request-to-Attach (RTA) applications, which is required from third parties such as cable companies and telcos prior to installing their service wires in Meralco facilities.

Other services provided are pole inventory and clearing operations, RTA audit, alley arm installation, unauthorized attachments survey, and correction and bundling of low sagging wires – all of which help Meralco’s fight against urban blight.

The Telecommunications business unit supports the industry in expanding telecommunications infrastructure and services. Over the past years, it has built and maintained networks for telcos, internet services providers, cable tv operators, mobile network operators and recently, the towercos. This business unit also connects the telcos’ and ISPs’ residential and enterprise customers for their internet service and network connectivity requirements. Today, Telecoms continues to deliver value to its customers by addressing the challenges while keeping its commitment to help customers achieve their goals.

MIESCOR, through its Trading business unit, partners with world-class manufacturers and suppliers to provide energy efficient solutions and high-quality products to its clients in the energy and power sector. Aside from provision of supplies, the business unit also offers delivery services of their products such as reclosers, kilowatthour meters, and instrument transformers, to name a few.

UNPARALLELED ENGINEERING EXPERTISE

Committed to its vision of becoming a world-class EPC company and the service provider of choice, MIESCOR has been recognized by the Philippine Contractors Accreditation Board (PCAB), the implementing agency of the Construction Industry Association of the Philippines.

UNPARALLELED EXPERTISE. MIESCOR has consistently been recognized by the Philippine Contractors Accreditation Board (PCAB) with a Quadruple A or “AAAA”, the highest license category for engineering, building and specialty electrical mechanical and communication facilities contractor, since 2018.

Armed with its wealth of experience and earned trust from its roster of clientele comprising local and global corporations, MIESCOR has been consistently classified by PCAB with a Quadruple A or “AAAA”, the highest license category for engineering, building and specialty electrical mechanical and communication facilities contractor, since 2018.

Another testament to the company’s commitment to cater high quality service to its customers and stakeholders, MIESCOR has also secured certifications from the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) such as the ISO 9001:2015 (Quality Management System), ISO 14001:2015 (Environmental Management System), and ISO 45001:2018 (Occupational Health and Safety Management System).

These certifications are a clear demonstration of how the company’s policies, practices and procedures are designed to ensure consistent service quality by meeting industry and international standards.

GROWING THE BUSINESS

Resolute in continuing to create value for its customers and stakeholders, MIESCOR has evolved and grown over the years. It now has three (3) subsidiaries that cater various services to different sectors and industries.

MIESCOR BUILDERS INC. (MBI), established in 1995 as the first ever subsidiary, offers key services such as building construction and underground capability under civil construction, testing and commissioning, line construction and substation operations and maintenance to distribution utilities, industrial and commercial units. Building on the energy expertise of its parent company, MBI is classified by PCAB with a Category AA license.

Six years later, MIESCOR LOGISTICS, INC. (MLI) was incorporated to undertake logistics management, particularly of fleets and warehouses, facilities maintenance, manpower, and managed services to distribution utilities, industrial and commercial units, and even residential customers. It continues to expand its services which now include vehicle leasing and transport services, and short-term cleaning and facilities repair works offered to corporate and residential accounts. Aside from being classified by PCAB with a Category AA license, MLI also celebrated its 22nd anniversary this year.

Fast forward to the later part of 2021, MIESCOR established its youngest subsidiary to date. Constantly evolving and developing, MIESCOR INFRASTRUCTURE DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION (MIDC), an independent tower company and a joint venture with US-based Stonepeak Infrastructure Partners, was launched as its newest venture in the telecommunications space. The unit’s key services include shared passive telecoms tower infrastructure construction, operations, and maintenance.

In 2022, MIDC signed a sale and leaseback agreement with Globe Telecom, Inc. (Globe) valued at P26.2 billion. Under the said agreement, MIDC will acquire 2,180 towers and related passive telecom infrastructure from Globe. The companies have so far transitioned 1,149 towers to date and have an ongoing build to suit engagement for 235 towers. The transition is expected to be completed in 2024.

MIESCOR continues to grow as its acquisition of MERALCO ENERGY, INC. (MServ), one of the country’s largest energy service companies (ESCOs) accredited by the Department of Energy (DOE), as its fourth subsidiary is underway.

Known as a one-stop shop for energy, engineering, and EPC services and classified by PCAB as Category AAA license, the strategic move to acquire MServ will further cement MIESCOR’s industry stature as MServ also serves as the lead integrator of One Meralco’s services to hyperscalers.

Meralco Senior Vice President and Chief Revenue Officer and MIESCOR Chairman of the Board Ferdinand O. Geluz

“MIESCOR continues to blaze the trail for engineering excellence. I am also proud to say that this 50-year-old subsidiary is the highest revenue contributor to One Meralco. Beyond corporate achievement, MIESCOR continues to dedicate its service to the Filipino people and contribute to the development of our nation,” Meralco Senior Vice President and Chief Revenue Officer and OIC for Subsidiary Businesses Ferdinand O. Geluz said.

VALUING AND RECOGNIZING LOYALTY

MIESCOR’s most tenured employee, Ms. Lourdeliza E. Escañan, has been with MIESCOR for 42 years. She started as a clerk back in 1981.

For MIESCOR, its entire workforce is not merely viewed as employees but rather as a family and partners in the business. The company is dedicated to creating an environment where hard work is greatly valued, and the members of its workforce can thrive.

Hence, for its 50th year, the company also deemed it fit to also celebrate its loyal and dedicated employees. MIESCOR’s most tenured employee has been with them for 42 years.

Lourdeliza Esguerra Escañan, or more commonly referred to as Ma’am Lorna, started as an intern back in 1980. A year after, she officially became a part of the company’s workforce in 1981 as a clerk, and eventually became an Executive Secretary in 1992.

In her over four decades as a MIESCOR employee, Ma’am Lorna has worked under eight (8) company presidents. She is now a Senior Manager and the lead of the company’s Administrative Services Group.

“One of my greatest achievements is my 42-year (and counting) career in MIESCOR. I get to do what I love to do for the company I love. My bosses and co-employees give me utmost respect and dearly appreciate my abilities. I am given opportunities to lead by example and guide my colleagues especially the new ones and share the knowledge I learned from my experiences over the years,” Ma’am Lorna said.

“I will forever be thankful to MIESCOR for all the things they helped me accomplish and all the unforgettable memories I will cherish for the rest of my life,” she added.

While many job seekers would generally prefer to apply in companies that are established and have been around for decades, Ma’am Lorna took a chance on MIESCOR despite the company being relatively young, at that time having been around for only eight years.

Ma’am Lorna’s career journey is a clear demonstration of how MIESCOR nurtures talents and cares for the welfare of its people, which earns them their invaluable loyalty and dedication. Needless to say, MIESCOR’s workforce is among the pillars that have enabled the company to achieve stability and longevity.

Building on its rich legacy born from the values of integrity, accountability, and malasakit, MIESCOR will continue its mission to be the country’s premiere end-to-end engineering service provider. Propelled by the resilience, hard work, and shared passion of its exceptional workforce, MIESCOR’s legacy will continue to be passed on as it adds another fifty and more years to its history of excellent service.

Meralco Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer and MIESCOR Director Ronnie L. Aperocho

“As we celebrate MIESCOR’s 50 years, we also celebrate each and every employee, past and present, who has contributed to and has been part of the company’s legacy. For half a century, MIESCOR has served as a beacon of hope through its programs and initiatives that have affected positive change not just to the lives of our customers but also to the communities we serve and to our nation,” Meralco Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Ronnie L. Aperocho, who also sits on the Board of Directors of MIESCOR, said.

Meralco enjoins the public to observe electrical safety for accident-free New Year festivities https://www.bworldonline.com/spotlight/2023/12/29/566052/meralco-enjoins-the-public-to-observe-electrical-safety-for-accident-free-new-year-festivities/ Fri, 29 Dec 2023 07:17:11 +0000 https://www.bworldonline.com/?p=566052 The Manila Electric Company (Meralco) has reminded the public to observe electrical safety as preparations for the New Year go on full swing to ensure a bright and accident-free celebration.

While Meralco Business Centers will be closed from Dec. 30 to Jan. 1, the distribution utility’s crews will remain on standby 24/7 to keep the lights on for its 7.8 million customers as they welcome and celebrate a safe and festive New Year.

“We are reminding our customers to avoid lighting fireworks and firecrackers near our electrical facilities to avoid any possible untoward incident. Rest assured that our crews are on standby to provide any needed electrical service assistance as we welcome the New Year,” Meralco Vice President and Head of Corporate Communications Joe R. Zaldarriaga said.

To ensure a bright, merry, and accident-free holiday celebration with family and friends, Meralco reminded customers to:

  • Light fireworks away from electrical facilities and decorations. Lighting fireworks and pyrotechnics near poles, power lines, and transformers can cause power outage and accidents;
  • Stay clear from electrical facilities when using party items. Refrain from using party poppers and balloons near power lines since this can cause power outages;
  • Have a fire extinguisher on standby. When using firecrackers to ring in the New Year, make sure that there is a fire extinguisher nearby in case the firecrackers accidentally come into contact with flammable materials;
  • Avoid ‘octopus connections’ and overloading. Do not plug extension cords into one another or octopus connection. Overloaded electrical outlets or extension cords are one of the most common causes of fire incidents; and
  • Unplug Christmas lights and other appliances when not in use.Remember to unplug Christmas lights and other appliances when not in use or before leaving the house.

Customers can report power outages and other concerns to Meralco through its official social media accounts on Facebook and X formerly Twitter. They may also text their concerns to 0920-9716211 or 0917-5516211 or contact the Meralco Hotline at 16211 and 8631-1111.

GCash for Business powers payroll transformation: Embracing contactless disbursement for a modern workforce https://www.bworldonline.com/spotlight/2023/12/28/565292/gcash-for-business-powers-payroll-transformation-embracing-contactless-disbursement-for-a-modern-workforce/ Wed, 27 Dec 2023 16:05:10 +0000 https://www.bworldonline.com/?p=565292 In the age of digital transformation, the way customers approach their interactions with businesses has undergone a significant shift — but so have employees. While workplace trends point to flexibility as a key factor for employee satisfaction, most companies address this through hybrid or work-from-anywhere arrangements.

However, there is an untapped opportunity for innovation that highly impacts the employee experience: payroll.

“The pandemic highlighted many of the challenges we’ve always known about traditional payroll — security vulnerabilities, inefficiencies, and inconveniences for both the employer and the employee,” said Kate Cruz, Head of B2B Growth Marketing.

Throughout the pandemic, GCash for Business provided over 217,000 individuals with financial assistance, disbursing over PHP200 million without disruption from lockdowns and mobility restrictions. Even government agencies were able to provide uninterrupted services. The Makati Local Government Unit was able to disburse financial aid during this time, providing cash directly to their constituents’ Makatizen eWallet app powered by GCash.

Since then, the finance super app has fulfilled over 19 million disbursements servicing over 700,000 monthly users both in the public and private sectors.

“The COVID-19 pandemic is not the last disruption businesses will face in their lifetimes, so the flexibility of their payroll and disbursement systems dictate how employees and other business stakeholders receive — or don’t receive — their due compensation,” added Ms. Cruz.

While company innovation usually focuses on customer obsession, employee expectations have also evolved to reflect the new capabilities and opportunities enabled by technology.

“Companies tend to focus on other areas to streamline and improve operations, but GCash for Business makes it easy for businesses to develop a robust contactless fund disbursement system that can significantly impact not just employee morale but deliver tangible business results,” Ms. Cruz said.

Simplifying Payroll, Enhancing Security, and Elevating Employee Engagement

A study by the PCI Security Standards Council found that contactless payments can lead to increased employee satisfaction due to convenience and better security. At the same time, employers can streamline the time and money spent on disbursements and reduce incidents of fraud.

To help businesses empower their employees, GCash for Business makes it easy for companies to access the finance super app’s various features:

  • Easy Access to cash, compensation, and incentives

With GCash for Business, companies can easily and quickly disburse loans, incentives, rewards, and even government subsidies directly to their employees’ GCash e-wallet, eliminating processing time and manpower otherwise needed if these disbursements were done via physical checks and other forms of paper trail.

Streamlining enterprises’ payroll system further, GCash for Business also supports the onboarding of new employees within 24 hours and offers no minimum balance requirements.

Payouts can be done securely, safely, and effortlessly with the Funds Disbursement System. This intuitive disbursement portal allows employers to customize disbursement schedules, generate reports, and view their fund history.

  • Easy Access to Lending Products

Employees with a verified GCash account can easily access lending solutions such as GCredit, GGives, and GLoan with 0% collateral to fund their goals and other life needs. This allows employers to extend financial support without the need to manage and maintain a separate fund for their employees.

  • Easy Access to Digital Savings

To help maximize their earnings, employees have access to GSave to open digital bank accounts with higher interest rates. Since they are verified GCash users, GSave makes it easy to open new savings accounts with some of the country’s most reputable banking institutions without the long processes and tedious requirements.

  • Easy Access to Investment Products

Employees with verified GCash accounts can further expedite their earning potential with investment options available through the app. They can choose to invest in local stocks via GStocks, take advantage of expertly managed funds through GInvest, or try their hand at crypto trading via GCrypto.

  • Easy Access to Financial Empowerment

By leveraging the disbursement solutions of GCash for Business, employers ultimately expand their employees’ access to financial tools that empower them to take better control of their financial future. With access to features like Pay Bills, Insurance, International Remittance, and GCash Pro, employers empower their employees with the capability to manage, track, and grow their finances all in one single app.

In today’s fast-paced world, financial stability and security are crushing for employees. GCash for Business is a powerful tool that enables businesses to empower their employees to reach their financial goals and at the same time streamline the payroll processes and operations.

“In a world where technology and innovation are rapidly transforming the way we live and work, GCash for Business offers powerful solutions for local companies to leverage on to delight their customers, innovate on their operations, and empower and retain their employees,” said Cruz. “It may sound complicated, but GCash for Business makes it easy.”

AC Health strengthens pharma footprint through investment in St. Joseph Drug https://www.bworldonline.com/spotlight/2023/12/27/565566/ac-health-strengthens-pharma-footprint-through-investment-in-st-joseph-drug/ Tue, 26 Dec 2023 22:00:28 +0000 https://www.bworldonline.com/?p=565566 Ayala Healthcare Holdings, Inc. (AC Health) has acquired a significant minority stake in North Luzon-based pharmaceutical company, St. Joseph Drug (Joleco Resources, Inc.). The definitive agreements were signed last Dec. 15 between St. Joseph Drug and AC Health’s pharmaceutical arm, AHCHI Pharma Ventures, Inc. (APV).

Established in 1958 by pharmacist Jose “Pepe” Cruz and his wife Leila Lagman from Dagupan City, St. Joseph Drug has grown from a modest provincial drugstore with three employees and a 3.5-meter storefront into a leading regional pharmaceutical chain spanning over 112 stores across Northern Luzon.

“The addition of St. Joseph Drug to our portfolio is in line with our commitment to enhance accessibility and affordability of healthcare for Filipinos nationwide. St. Joseph Drug, alongside our existing retail pharma brand, Generika Drugstore, will expand our capacity and footprint to distribute quality and affordable medicine to our countrymen. Together with our pharma importation businesses I.E. Medica and MedEthix, we will greatly enhance synergies and efficiencies within our pharmacy platform to further improve our products and services throughout our AC Health network,” said Paolo Borromeo, President and CEO of AC Health.

Ma. Socorro Dorotea “Gigi” L. Cruz, Chairman, President, and CEO of St. Joseph Drug, also expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, stating, “This partnership with AC Health marks a significant milestone in St. Joseph Drug’s journey. We are proud to have established St. Joseph Drug as a household name in Northern Luzon over the years, and we look forward to broadening our reach with AC Health.”

AHCHI Pharma Ventures, Inc. (APV) serves as the holding company for AC Health’s pharmaceutical businesses. Composed of Generika Drugstore, the pioneer in generic retail pharmacies, and I.E. Medica and MedEthix, its pharma importation and distribution arms, APV now includes St. Joseph Drug. This strategic acquisition enables AC Health to strengthen its pharma footprint and reach more Filipinos throughout the country.

Is Rooftop Solar a good next step for my business? Here are four good questions to ask https://www.bworldonline.com/spotlight/2023/12/23/565284/is-rooftop-solar-a-good-next-step-for-my-business-here-are-four-good-questions-to-ask/ Fri, 22 Dec 2023 16:01:27 +0000 https://www.bworldonline.com/?p=565284 Rooftop Solar is increasingly becoming a popular energy efficiency solution among many businesses – and for good reason.

Investing in Rooftop Solar packs a lot of benefits such as a potential to lower electricity bills by 10-15% depending on your business’ load profile, load consumption, and local electricity rates. Minimal care is also required, with preventive maintenance needed roughly twice a year. The rooftop solar technology is also getting better and more efficient, so the panels are more durable and last longer. The unit’s expected lifespan is over 25 years, so you’ll get your money’s worth.

Most importantly, investing in a Rooftop Solar solution lowers your carbon footprint. Harnessing renewable energy for your business is great for the environment. Beyond efficiency and cost savings, this decision to invest in clean and green energy benefits not just your business but also your whole community. You are contributing to lowering the country’s overall carbon emissions.

With all these benefits in mind, it’s no wonder more and more businesses are considering investing in this technology, but how do you know if your business is the right fit for it?

Here are 4 initial questions you can ask your team to see if Rooftop Solar is the next best step for your business:

1. What are your consistent business operation hours?

Since Rooftop Solar harnesses energy from the sun, your business has to match solar productivity hours which is between 6 in the morning and 6 at night.

It’s also important to note that the load requirement has to be consistent to be compatible with Rooftop Solar – meaning your consumption is 7 days a week and steady on an annual basis. It’s also important that there are no extended seasonal declines.

If your business productive hours match that timeframe and you have a consistent load requirement, then, Rooftop Solar can be a good option for you.

2. How much are you paying for your electricity bills?

Another factor that can determine whether Rooftop Solar can be a great step for your business is to study your previous electricity bills. If the rates are already flying through the roof, it’s a good idea to opt for Rooftop Solar to curb the costs for your business. Not only will it result in greater efficiency, but it also has potential for big cost savings for you in the long run.

3. Do you have enough roof space and structural support for the Rooftop Solar panels?

It’s critical to examine the condition of your current roof to see if there is ample space and structural support for the solar rooftop panels. You will need to assess factors such as the age and condition of your roof, its material, shape and size, among other things. It is advisable to get professional advice in this assessment from a trusted energy partner.

4. What are your sustainability goals?

Many companies and organizations nowadays are becoming more conscious about their environmental impact. Investing in Rooftop Solar can greatly help your business reach your specific sustainability and decarbonization goals and effectively lower your overall carbon footprint.

It’s important to connect with a trusted energy partner when it comes to Rooftop Solar.

After asking yourself these questions above, you will then have a rudimentary understanding if your business is a good fit for Rooftop Solar. However, in order to fully check the viability of this technology for your business, it’s critical to have the help of a reliable energy partner such as First Gen Corporation to get clear guidance on next steps.

First Gen is a known leading producer of 100% Clean and Green energy with a diverse portfolio of zero-coal energy sources such as geothermal, solar, hydro, wind, and natural gas. Aside from being a clean energy champion, First Gen, through Pi Energy Inc., also offers integrated energy products and solutions such as Rooftop Solar to businesses and communities who want maximum productivity and efficiency in their operations, all while lowering their costs and reducing their carbon footprint.

First Gen, through Pi Energy, is a reliable energy partner through every step of the process because they can provide assessment of viability of Rooftop Solar for your business, construction of units, installation, and even maintenance of Rooftop Solar. They are a specialized one-stop energy solutions provider that can help you maximize the technology’s value for your business and also help you with needed requirements for its installation.

Investing in energy efficiency solutions such as Rooftop Solar opens your business to a lot of potential benefits in cost savings and operational efficiency. It is a great opportunity to optimize readily-available energy sources but most importantly, it’s an investment toward a cleaner and greener Philippines. By being more energy-efficient and investing in renewable energy, you are contributing toward the fight for a decarbonized and regenerative future for this generation and the next.

Why businesses should care more about energy efficiency https://www.bworldonline.com/spotlight/2023/12/22/565287/why-businesses-should-care-more-about-energy-efficiency/ Fri, 22 Dec 2023 03:54:20 +0000 https://www.bworldonline.com/?p=565287 Energy efficiency is a crucial but often overlooked aspect of business. Energy efficiency, simply defined, is using less energy to perform the same task and reducing any energy waste to improve productivity. Despite its inherent benefits for businesses and communities, energy efficiency is often sidelined in most business conversations because of competing priorities.

You may ask, why should more businesses invest in energy efficiency solutions?

First and foremost, investing in energy efficiency solutions can result in significant cost savings. Conducting an energy audit might seem like an unnecessary step to some, but it has long-term financial benefits. Having a data-driven energy audit can help your business assess how you consume power and identify power efficiency and conservation opportunities. This then helps you see ways in which your business can optimize energy use— saving on energy costs once implemented.

Aside from the cost savings on your electric bill, the increased operational efficiency also lessens the possibility of unforeseen interruptions in your process. Unforeseen interruptions lead to unforeseen costs. Being aware of your energy use is the first step to being more energy-efficient.

Aside from conducting an energy audit, other solutions that can help you lower energy costs in the long run include installing rooftop solar panels, getting a remote energy monitoring system, switching to LED light bulbs, and even investing in regular maintenance for your major electrical equipment and HVAC systems.

Next, taking active steps toward energy efficiency is also important to comply with the Department of Energy’s requirements. If your facility consumes at least 100,000 kWh annually, you are required to comply with the requirements of the Republic Act No. 11285 or the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Act of 2019. This law aims to institutionalize energy efficiency and conservation and to incentivize the reduction of energy consumption. It also encourages the adoption of energy-efficient solutions and programs to contribute toward national energy security and environmental goals.

Lastly, energy efficiency is good for our environment. Being energy-efficient doesn’t just help reduce cost or ensure compliance, it also simultaneously lowers your carbon footprint. Carbon emissions worsen the effects of climate change. By pursuing energy efficiency, you are doing your part toward a greener, cleaner, and more resilient Philippines.

We believe that now, more than ever, there is a greater call for businesses, communities, and organizations to rethink the way we consume power. We need to optimize processes by adapting energy efficiency practices. Doing so can help lower our overall carbon emissions, which is crucial in our fight against the climate crisis.

With all these reasons in mind, businesses must consider energy efficiency in their long-term goals. While tackling energy efficiency may seem daunting, it doesn’t have to be. Having a reliable energy partner like First Gen Corporation that can provide various tailor-fit solutions to help you reach your decarbonization and productivity goals can help make the process more convenient and bring more value to your business.

First Gen is a known leading producer of 100% Clean and Green energy with a diverse portfolio of zero-coal energy sources such as geothermal, solar, hydro, wind, and natural gas. Aside from being a trusted supplier of clean energy, First Gen also offers energy efficiency solutions such as Rooftop Solar, Energy Audit, Transformers, Thermal Scanning, Remote Energy Monitoring System (REMS), Preventive Maintenance Services, Waste Heat Recovery, and many more — making it a one-stop shop for various energy needs.

By addressing energy efficiency, you are investing in long-term cost savings, regulatory compliance, and risk management. Most importantly, you are contributing to the collective effort toward greening our businesses, communities, and organizations. Together, we can take steps toward a decarbonized and regenerative future for all.

McDonald’s PH, Coca-Cola PH gift Noche Buena packs and 1.5 million Happy Meal toys to communities this Christmas https://www.bworldonline.com/spotlight/2023/12/21/564468/mcdonalds-ph-coca-cola-ph-gift-noche-buena-packs-and-1-5-million-happy-meal-toys-to-communities-this-christmas/ Thu, 21 Dec 2023 04:06:48 +0000 https://www.bworldonline.com/?p=564468 McDonald’s Philippines returns with its partner Coca-Cola Philippines to brighten the holiday season for Filipino children and families through “Share the Light” where they brought Christmas celebrations and gave away 1.5 million pieces of Happy Meal toys to different communities nationwide.

“Share The Light” is an initiative of McDonald’s Philippines and Coca-Cola Philippines which aims to spread kindness and cheer to partner communities this Christmas season. During its launch event in Brgy. Matandang Balara, Quezon City and Brgy. Pajo, Lapu-Lapu City, “Share the Light” brought fun games, various activity booths, and hot meals. Families also took home Noche Buena packs consisting of a 6-pc McShare Box, 1.5L Coke bottle, and Happy Meal toys. Employees from both McDonald’s and Coca-Cola also volunteered to serve meals and help host the festivities.

“At McDonald’s, it is important for us to make a positive impact in the lives of Filipinos—whether it is our customers, partners, or families in need—especially during this time of the year. We are very happy to once again partner with Coca-Cola to share feel-good moments with Filipino families through our food,” said Kenneth S. Yang, CEO and President of McDonald’s Philippines.

“During our celebrations in Quezon City and Lapu-Lapu City, we were able to spread cheer to over 400 families. Next year, we hope to extend this celebration to more partner communities. Beyond the holidays, our goal is to share the light we experience not only during this season but every day. Through Ronald McDonald House Charities’ McDonald’s Kindness Kitchen, we can serve warm meals to communities in need.”

Both “Share the Light” celebrations were done in communities supported by McDonald’s Philippines’ charity of choice, Ronald McDonald House Charities, through its Bahay Bulilit Learning Center program. Bahay Bulilit stands as one of McDonald’s Philippines’ flagship programs, offering children a safe space to play and learn while their parents work. The goal is to establish nationwide learning centers in areas where they are most needed, and this is achieved through partnerships with the DSWD and local government units. Currently, there are 39 learning centers nationwide through this initiative.

As part of this year’s initiative, McDonald’s Philippines will also be giving 1.5 million pieces of Happy Meal toys to various communities nationwide.

UnionBank’s ‘Powered UP’ campaign launches UB Negosyante https://www.bworldonline.com/spotlight/2023/12/21/565037/unionbanks-powered-up-campaign-launches-ub-negosyante/ Thu, 21 Dec 2023 03:30:30 +0000 https://www.bworldonline.com/?p=565037 Solidifying its reputation of being a bank for MSMEs, Union Bank of the Philippines (UnionBank) recently launched UB Negosyante, its “Powered UP” solution for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), at the Podium Hall in Mandaluyong last Nov. 8. The new brand for UnionBank’s MSME business banking was unveiled to the media and launched to a gathering of MSME clients and prospects.

UB Negosyante’s “Powered UP” campaign comes on the heels of the Bank’s business banking app being recognized as the Best Smart Payments Solution by an SME Bank by The Digital Banker at the recently held Global Retail Banking Innovation Awards 2023 in Singapore. UB Negosyante was launched with the aim of supporting MSMEs in their entrepreneurial journey by prioritizing their needs, whether they’re small and medium business owners, sole proprietors, or micropreneurs who want to take their business to the next level.

UnionBank launched the MSME Business Banking app in 2021 and the powered up UB Negosyante builds on the benefits of the original app as it has enhanced tools that can help entrepreneurs take their business even further. During the launch, UnionBank showcased successful MSME clients while Marketing Entrepreneurship Mentor (and UnionBank independent director) Josiah Go shared Innovation tips for the attendees and participated in a fireside chat with seasoned entrepreneurs, Jorge Wieneke and Nene Tamayo-Plamio, in a program hosted by Lia Cruz.

According to UnionBank Institutional Segment Marketing Head Dino Velasco, the new name “UB Negosyante” represents UnionBank’s commitment to support the Filipino MSME and help them rapidly grow their businesses though digital means.

“The new UB Negosyante app will ensure that the growth and momentum of our current clients will continue as we enable new clients to enjoy the same success,” Velasco said.

“SMEs face so many challenges due to various pain points which can be discouraging to them. We wanted to address those pain points, so we put together a single user experience through the UB Negosyante app that will address those pain points, may they be related to collection, reconciliation, disbursement, just to name a few,” said UnionBank Business Banking Head Jaypee Soliman.

At the “Powered UP” campaign launch, best practice tips meant to aid entrepreneurs on their entrepreneurial journeys were shared with the attendees while highlighting the features of the new solution. In 2022, UnionBank launched the “Power to Grow” #WalangMaliitNaBusiness campaign, and “Powered UP” is the next level of the Bank’s continuing MSME story of accelerating growth through technological  and financial enablement and inclusion.

UB Negosyante has an improved mobile app. It has a fully-featured mobile application that allows SMEs to transfer funds, pay bills, collect payments, and deposit checks on the go. It comes with BizStarter, a basic checking account that requires a low opening and maintaining balance of just P5,000.

There’s also QRPH/UPAY for MSMEs, an all-in-one payment acceptance hub that allows merchants to collect payments easily via QR or link. In return, customers can pay through various channels such as banks, E-wallets, over the counter, and more.

Through the new app, customers can also apply for loans with a multi-purpose credit line up to P10 million; an MD line which is a credit line up to P10 million, available to medical practitioners; and the Dealer Financing Line, a non-secured credit line that enables buyers from supply chain companies to pay their dues efficiently through a digital platform, among many others.

The UB Negosyante suite of solutions includes UnionBank GlobalLinker, an online platform where SMEs can set up a free online store to boost their online marketing, make the right SME business connections, access exclusive SME benefits on essential business services, and learn from other SMEs and experts.

These solutions are in line with UnionBank’s advocacy of helping MSMEs in the digital economy, and is also one of the many ways the Bank is contributing to nation-building by helping Filipino entrepreneurs digitize their business as part of its Tech-Up Pilipinas advocacy.

Pag-IBIG approves P12 billion funding for over 9,000 4PH housing units  https://www.bworldonline.com/spotlight/2023/12/21/565035/pag-ibig-approves-p12-billion-funding-for-over-9000-4ph-housing-units/ Thu, 21 Dec 2023 02:42:16 +0000 https://www.bworldonline.com/?p=565035 Pag-IBIG Fund has approved a P12-billion revolving credit line for the National Housing Authority (NHA), adequate to finance the development of 9,110 housing units, with an initial 6,967 homes to be built in Quezon City, Valenzuela, Zamboanga and San Juan as part of the government’s Pambansang Pabahay para sa Pilipino Housing or 4PH Program, top officials announced on Dec. 20.

“We are happy to report that the Pambansang Pabahay para sa Pilipino Program of the Marcos Administration continues to gain momentum. Pag-IBIG Fund’s approval of a revolving credit line for its fellow key shelter agency, the National Housing Authority, not only shows the government’s united front in addressing the housing backlog but also shows our shared commitment to provide our fellow Filipinos with decent yet affordable shelter in sustainable communities,” said Secretary Jose Rizalino L. Acuzar, who heads the Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development (DHSUD) and the 11-member Pag-IBIG Fund Board of Trustees.

Pag-IBIG Fund’s revolving credit line for the NHA shall initially finance the construction of medium and high-rise condominiums consisting of 4,111 units in Quezon City, 1,377 units in Valenzuela, 944 units in Zamboanga and 535 units in San Juan. The revolving credit line is equipped with safeguards for the proper and efficient use of funds, with the NHA providing the corresponding loan collaterals. Each drawdown from the credit line has a maximum payment term of three (3) years and includes provisions to ensure the release of funds for the intended housing projects. Once constructed, intended beneficiaries of these projects who are active Pag-IBIG Fund members may purchase the housing units through a Pag-IBIG Housing Loan under the 4PH Program.

Pag-IBIG Fund Chief Executive Officer Marilene C. Acosta, meanwhile, stated that Pag-IBIG Fund’s credit line for the NHA is part of its commitment to the Marcos Administration’s efforts of addressing the housing backlog under the 4PH Program.

“Since day one, Pag-IBIG Fund has provided its full support to President Marcos’ 4PH Program as it aligns with our mandate of providing our members with the opportunity to own a home.  With the housing projects under the 4PH Program, not only will Pag-IBIG Fund members have the opportunity to own quality homes at lower-than-market prices, they may also purchase these under the most affordable terms through a Pag-IBIG Housing Loan under the 4PH program. We are happy to be able to work with the NHA and provide added funding for their housing projects under the most secure and affordable terms, so that we can advance our common objective of empowering our fellow Filipinos to achieve homeownership,” Ms. Acosta said.

Last week, Pag-IBIG Fund announced that it approved a P929-million revolving credit line for the Social Housing Finance Corporation (SHFC) to finance the construction of 2,264 4PH housing units in Pampanga, Manila, Misamis Oriental, and Davao.

The project involved the construction of a 115 kV switchyard, installation of an 83 MVA power transformer bank, construction of a new 115 kV line with a total length of eight (8) kilometers, and three (3) 34.5 kV new distribution feeders.

The Balagtas Substation addressed the critical loading of Sta. Maria and Saog substations, improved the reliability and flexibility of Meralco’s distribution system, and provides additional capacity to accommodate the increasing load demand in Balagtas and other adjacent areas including the initial power demand of the proposed new Bulacan airport and railway. The new substation will also help in the immediate restoration of electricity service in the areas of Balagtas, Sta. Maria, Bocaue, and Marilao in Bulacan during incidents of power outages.

Meralco continuously invests and works for the improvement of its distribution system to ensure the delivery of safe, stable, and reliable electricity service to its customers as part of its commitment to #KeepingTheLightsOn and #PoweringABrighterTomorrow.

Driving sustainability and comfort with Lexus’ signature BEV https://www.bworldonline.com/spotlight/2023/12/20/564499/driving-sustainability-and-comfort-with-lexus-signature-bev/ Tue, 19 Dec 2023 16:15:25 +0000 https://www.bworldonline.com/?p=564499 The automotive industry is currently undergoing a significant global transformation due to the increasing awareness of sustainability and the demand for eco-friendly yet luxurious transportation options.

As concerns about environmental impact and climate change continue to grow, automakers are shifting their attention toward developing cleaner, greener, and more sustainable solutions.

Major car brands are now investing heavily in research and development to create innovative and sustainable electric alternatives. As a result, these vehicles are harnessing the power of renewable energy sources, significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions and diminishing the industry’s carbon footprint.

Lexus, a luxury car brand based in Japan, seeks to address the importance of sustainability, technological innovation, and a seamless driving experience with their first battery electric vehicle (BEV) on the market — the Lexus RZ 450e.

Lexus’ flagship model is designed with precision and purpose, showcasing its commitment to pushing the limits of electric vehicle capabilities as the automotive industry enters the age of electrification.

Lexus Chief Engineer Takashi Watanabe said that the development of RZ strongly emphasizes the delivery of an incredible driving experience.

“The RZ has been developed with the aim of creating a unique Lexus BEV that feels secure to ride in, is pleasing to the touch, and is exhilarating to drive. Our vision is to use electrification technology as a means to enhance fundamental vehicle performance so that we can continue to pursue driving pleasure for all future generations,” said Mr. Watanabe.

Lexus’ electrification

At the heart of the RZ innovation lies the commitment to the Lexus Driving Signature, a philosophy that revolves around elevating the core characteristics of the brand — confidence, control, and comfort — in all driving situations.

Central to achieving this vision was the meticulous design, focusing on enhancing aerodynamics and energy efficiency.

The Lexus RZ boasts an impressive drag coefficient of 0.28 Cd, dedicated to minimizing air resistance by incorporating aerodynamic measures at every level.

The cabin shape is optimized to ensure smooth airflow on the outside and comfort inside. The belt molding sits flush with the bodywork, helping regulate the airflow and stabilize the car. The rear spoiler design contributes to handling and stability in straight-line driving and crosswinds without producing drag. The back door is shaped to adjust the airflow angle from the roof, reducing drag and contributing to the driver’s sense of the car being in firm contact with the road.

To further reduce drag, the car features a fully covered underfloor, with the front section featuring a dimpled surface that helps maintain stability at high speeds, and the rear features fins that direct airflow from the wheels.

Lexus RZ also comes with new e-Axles, the compact motor units used front and rear that work in conjunction with the new DIRECT4 all-wheel electronic drive torque control. The system adjusts the vehicle’s posture, traction, and power distribution according to the driving conditions.

In addition, the engineers and designers of Lexus RZ made it a priority to ensure that the cabin environment was calm and quiet. Lexus applied a three-part strategy: controlling the noise, preventing it from entering the cabin, and paying particular attention to the noise experienced in the rear seats.

The vehicle is equipped with the all-new Lexus Link multimedia platform, enabling faster operation and providing increased functions for connectivity, efficient planning and communication.

The RZ’s cockpit is an evolution of Lexus’ Tazuna concept to offer maximum convenience to the driver, featuring a precise arrangement of meters, controls, and displays that allow the driver to operate the vehicle with minimal hand and eye movements.

Partnering with premium audio equipment brand Mark Levinson, Lexus provides the vehicle with Pure Stage technology, which replicates the distinct sound features of specific performance venues, providing a unique and immersive sound experience. The car’s 10-speaker system ensures high-quality sound reproduction across all genres of music.

Safety features

The RZ also benefits from the latest generation of the Lexus Safety System +, which includes new and enhanced functions that work seamlessly in the context of a battery-electric vehicle, recognizing and responding to a wider range of accident risks.

The Pre-Collision System used by the RZ employs radar and camera technology that has a greater detection range and can recognize a broader range of hazards than before, including the risk of a head-on collision with traffic from the left or right when turning at an intersection.

The Lexus Safety System + package for the RZ also provides an Automatic High Beam or an Adaptive High-beam System (AHS) for automatic adjustment of the headlight beams to achieve optimal forward illumination without dazzling oncoming traffic. The RZ is the first Lexus to be equipped with AHS using a single bi-projector LED headlight.

The RZ uses the smooth and simple e-latch electronic door release system, which is linked to the car’s Blind Spot Monitor to provide Safe Exit Assist. This prevents doors from being opened in the path of cycles or vehicles approaching from the rear. Lexus estimates that this safety feature can prevent more than 95% of accidents caused by hazardous door openings.

Other safety features include the following: Emergency Steering Assist to keep the car stable within its traffic lane; Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC) to allow driver to customize inter-vehicle distance setting; Lane Departure Alert (LDA) and Lane Tracing Assist (LTA) to distinguish road markings; Deep Neural Network to recognize 3D objects in adjacent lanes or work zones; Road Sign Assist to recognize highway warning and command signs; and Advanced Park to move the car efficiently into parking spaces.

Battery

The RZ 450e is equipped with a 71.4-kWh lithium-ion battery, which is expected to retain at least 90% of its capacity after ten years of driving. The vehicle achieves energy consumption between 16.8 kWh and 18.7 kWh per 100 km in the combined Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP) cycle.

The RZ comes with a compact and lightweight 11-kW onboard charger. When connected to a three-phase power supply, it only takes approximately 6.5 hours to fully recharge the battery. On the other hand, it will take about 10 hours when connected to a one-phase supply. The fastest way to recharge the battery is by connecting it to a DC fast-charging system, which can provide up to 80% charge in 30 minutes.

The all-new Lexus RZ 450e is available in several exterior finishes, including the new Aether Metallic, inspired by the blue sky, and the striking Sonic Copper. It is also available in Sonic Chrome, Sonic Quartz, Sonic Iridium, Graphite Black, and a bi-tone design with a black finish. The vehicle price starts at P4,828,000.

For more information, visit the Lexus website at lexus.com.ph or its Facebook (Lexus Philippines) and Instagram (@lexusph) pages. Android and iOS users can also get the latest updates and premium services via the MyLexus app.

Investors should constantly be aware of the latest developments in the economy and across industries, as well as how such trends affect the stock market in order for them to decide about their next moves for their respective portfolios, whether to buy, sell, or hold.

The performance of listed banks, for instance, have been affected by high inflation and borrowing costs during the third quarter of the year, according BDO Securities Research Head Abi Chiw.

“High inflation and borrowing costs during the quarter continued to curb credit demand with industry loan growth slowing further to 6.5% in September vs. 7.8% in June,” Ms. Chiw said in an email to BusinessWorld. “Nonetheless, banks are still able to deliver robust net interest income growth on higher loan margins and additional yield income from investment securities.”

The big banks, including BDO Unibank, Inc., were able to maintain earnings growth and double-digit return on equity (ROEs). Asset quality of their loan portfolios also remain strong despite the high interest rate environment, with nonperforming loan ratios still benign at 1.7%-2.0%, Ms. Chiw said.

Going forward, Ms. Chiw noted that economic trends affecting loan demand will likely to be monitored by market players. “Improving GDP growth and household incomes are likely to encourage consumer segment growth (credit cards, auto loans, home loans), while still elevated interest rates are seen to discourage companies from taking on new debt,” she said.

Regarding the impact of recent developments (BSP keeping interest rates at high levels and the Israel-Hamas conflict, to name a few) on the prospects of bank stocks in the coming quarters, banks generally benefit from higher-for-longer interest rates since it helps loan yields. However, prolonged periods of high interest rates may also bring about the risk of rising problem loans.

“Philippine banks and the BSP (Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas) are monitoring the war between Israel and Hamas, since the risk of increasing tensions in the Middle East region may exert upward pressure to global oil prices and inflation, which in turn, would have negative spillover effects to economic growth and equity markets,” Ms. Chiw explained.

Ranked as one of the leading investment banks in the Philippines, BDO Securities, a BDO Capital & Investment Corp. subsidiary, is stepping up its game in helping Filipinos invest, from investment funds to bank stocks, fixed-income securities, and more.

Whether their clients seek to starting up, build, or expand their wealth, BDO Securities is there to serve Filipinos and guide them through achieving their financial goals. As a full-service brokerage firm, BDO has got clients covered with trading, diversification of investments, and research reports.

Zarah Juan’s empowering collection ‘The Tarp Project’ unveiled at SM Aura https://www.bworldonline.com/spotlight/2023/12/19/564435/zarah-juans-empowering-collection-the-tarp-project-unveiled-at-sm-aura/ Tue, 19 Dec 2023 07:46:29 +0000 https://www.bworldonline.com/?p=564435 In a remarkable collaboration of fashion, sustainability, and social impact, SM Supermalls, in partnership with women’s rights organization SPARK! Philippines, the Tagbilaran City Government, renowned fashion brand Zarah Juan, and the Pilipinas Shell Foundation, recently launched “The Tarp Project” at the Outside the Box pop-up shop at SM Aura.

“The Tarp Project” is a pioneering initiative aimed at economically empowering women and addressing environmental challenges associated with tarpaulin production. The project involves upcycling used tarps sourced from landfills in the province of Bohol and Shell gasoline stations. Bag designer Zarah Juan transforms these discarded materials into beautifully designed and meticulously crafted bags together with the women in Tagbilaran City who earn from the sale of these bags.

Fashion with a purpose. Zarah Juan and the women of Tagbilaran transform used tarpaulins – what could have been discarded waste in landfills – into these fashionable tarp tote bags.

During the launch, Tagbilaran City Mayor Jane Yap said, “What I’d like people to take away from this partnership is how it’s not just about upcycling used tarpaulins into material for the tote bags – it’s also about engaging with a local Tagbilaran community of women to put the bags together, it represents livelihood opportunity as well”.

(From left) Bag designer Zarah Juan, Tagbilaran City Mayor Jane Yap, SM Supermalls President Steven Tan and SPARK Philippines Executive Director Mikaela Luisa Teves display the tote bags from The Tarp Project collection.

SM Supermalls becomes a key partner in this endeavor by providing a physical space to showcase the bags in SM Aura and making them more widely available for purchase through its online shopping app, SM Malls Online. The partnership underscores the importance of multi-sectoral efforts in creating positive change and SM’s reaffirmation of supporting innovative and socially impactful initiatives.

“SM has always been a strong supporter of women’s empowerment. When you provide women with livelihood opportunities, you have an opportunity to positively change lives, uplift families, and build more resilient communities,” said SM Supermalls President Steven Tan. “More than a venue to showcase these stylish upcycled totes, SM is honored to be part of a project that highlights women as catalysts for change, both for economic growth and environment protection,” Tan added.

Mikaela Luisa Teves, Executive Director of SPARK! Philippines, emphasized the importance of the partnership, saying, “The bags not only represent a unique and stylish accessory but also contribute to a larger mission of supporting women and mitigating the environmental impact of waste”.

“The Tarp Project” collection is available at Outside the Box, located at the Upper Ground Level of SM Aura, and on smmallsonline.com and zarahjuan.com.

Hundreds of SuperMoms and their families gathered on Saturday at the SM Mall of Asia Main Atrium to celebrate the #SuperMomsClubAnniversaryMeetup, which was preceded by an afternoon panel discussion led by Filipina Homebased Moms or FHMoms’ (FHMoms) founder, MK Bertulfo.

Founded in 2018, the SM SuperMoms Club has grown into a 275,000-strong online community who encourages, inspires, and uplifts each other to #KeepGoingSuperMoms. Bertulfo then took the stage to deliver a keynote speech before the launch of the official partnership between the marketing award-winning SuperMoms Club and its newest community partner, FHMoms.

The pre-program panel moderated by MK Bertulfo featured special guest Ms. Dimples Romana, and business owner Princess Canal, corporate professional Lorena Gonzales, and VA Christine Marie Carpio from FHMoms.

The pre-program panel led by Bertulfo featured inspiring women who shared their learnings on life as a SuperMom balancing their careers and professional responsibilities while raising their children and running their households. The panel was also graced by award-winning actress Dimples Romana, who shared words of wisdom with the community, “[It’s] very, very important that we take care of our health, mentally, physically, and emotionally.”

The actress and mom of three added, “We are entitled and we are deserving to be both strong and beautiful for everything that we have to do in a day.”

EDC recognized in Steward Leadership 25 2023 for pioneering geothermal forest restoration through BINHI https://www.bworldonline.com/spotlight/2023/12/18/564169/edc-recognized-in-steward-leadership-25-2023-for-pioneering-geothermal-forest-restoration-through-binhi/ Mon, 18 Dec 2023 05:50:08 +0000 https://www.bworldonline.com/?p=564169 The Energy Development Corp. (EDC), First Gen Corp.’s 100% renewable energy arm and the world’s largest vertically integrated geothermal energy producer, was included in this year’s Steward Leadership 25 (SL25) for its exemplary BINHI greening legacy program.

Organized by Stewardship Asia Centre (SAC), INSEAD Hoffmann Global Institute for Business and Society, WTW, and The Straits Times, this prestigious award recognizes the top 25 projects that have significantly impacted stakeholders, society, future generations, and the environment across 14 countries in the Asia-Pacific Region and the Middle East.

BINHI is EDC’s flagship 15-year-old environmental program that aims to restore and protect the forests within its geothermal project sites. At the core of this endeavor is the propagation of endangered and threatened Philippine native tree species to ensure that ecosystems and communities are resilient.

“This honor is not only for our BINHI team and over 200 partners across the country. It is our tribute to the forests that we have been nurturing as part of our solution to climate change,” said Allan V. Barcena, assistant vice-president and head of Corporate Relations and Communications at EDC.

Regeneration through reforestation

BINHI strategically operates in EDC’s major geothermal sites across the country, covering 10,140 hectares of reforested areas and 200 tree parks and arboreta.

Its success lies in its multi-sectoral approach, fostering partnerships with forest communities, nonprofit organizations, local government units, and private enterprises that have been working to not only bridge forest gaps but to also bring back to abundance BINHI’s 145 priority Philippine native and threatened tree species since the program’s launch in December 2008. This collaborative effort has positioned BINHI as the largest private sector-led forest restoration initiative in the Philippines.

Global impact

EDC BINHI’s commitment extends globally through partnerships such as the Global Tree Assessment (GTA) program with Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI). As the sole Philippine partner in GTA, BINHI has contributed to the assessment of 1,470 Philippine endemic and near-endemic tree species, highlighting EDC’s commitment to global conservation efforts.

Carbon absorption and energy security

BINHI has enabled EDC to absorb more carbon than it emits, making EDC the only Philippine company to achieve this feat. In 2021, BINHI forests absorbed over 1.7 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalent, contributing to EDC’s overall renewable energy operations that produced a little over 9,000 gigawatt hours of clean power, avoiding using coal or fossil fuels.

Vision for the future

BINHI is a testament to steward leadership, emphasizing EDC’s conscientious and impactful use of natural resources. The company envisions BINHI spreading its roots further to establish a decarbonized and green future not only for the Philippines but for the entire region and the world.

EDC is First Gen Corp.’s 100% renewable energy subsidiary with over 1,480-MW total installed capacity that accounts for 20% of the country’s total installed renewable energy capacity. Its almost 1,200-MW geothermal portfolio comprises 62% of the country’s total installed geothermal capacity and has put the Philippines on the map as the 3rd largest geothermal producer in the world.

IT Group, Inc. championing digital evolution in Bacolod City https://www.bworldonline.com/spotlight/2023/12/18/564157/it-group-inc-championing-digital-evolution-in-bacolod-city/ Mon, 18 Dec 2023 03:00:45 +0000 https://www.bworldonline.com/?p=564157 In the 2022 Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) report, the region of Negros Occidental claimed the top economy in Western Visayas for 2021. According to the PSA, Negros Occidental got the largest regional growth with 26.4%, whereas Bacolod City contributed 13.8% of overall growth.

“The sugarcane industry of Negros Island sweetened the life of many Filipinos over the years. It proves that behind Negros growth and success is the collective hard work and sacrifice of its people. Whether in the sugarcane industry or not, Negros region economy, especially Bacolod City, keeps getting stronger and open for business ventures,” said Ellirie Aviles, IT Group, Inc.’s senior business development officer.

This year, Bacolod City Mayor Alfredo Abelardo Benitez shared that the city is about to enter its “golden age of infrastructure” as multibillion investment projects are lined up, including major road projects from top property developers, with an estimated aggregate cost of P2.7 billion.

As Bacolod is currently at the center of regional development, Mr. Aviles sees the door of opportunity to venture together with the people who see value in innovation and technology in their city.

Venturing Together

Recently, IT Group, Inc., or ITG, one of the leading IT solution partners in the ASEAN region that helps organizations with their digital transformation, visited Bacolod City for the Negros Business Leaders Forum: Navigating the Future of Business Technology event held last November at the Chalet, L’Fisher Hotel.

“As we navigate the dynamic business landscape of Western Visayas, the forum stands as an avenue for leaders to work together, creating impactful business decisions to help the people of Bacolod. This forum is not just a discussion but a lived experience, showcasing our commitment to innovation, collaboration, and sustainable progress,” Mr. Aviles said.

In partnership with Negros’ Rotary Council of Presidents, Rotary Club of Bacolod North, and Rotary Club of Sagay-Sinigayan, the business forum ventured into Bacolod’s economic growth and how innovation and technology can boost its emerging market.

Almira Navarro, ITG’s chief marketing officer, shared that the night was filled with new learnings, new partnerships, and a pool of solid networking among Bacolod’s movers and shakers.

“It was a night to remember, seeing leaders of Bacolod venturing together to elevate businesses through innovative solutions and modern technology. We are thrilled with pure excitement because of our shared vision, leveraging growth and development in the City of Bacolod and eventually the advancement that will benefit the entire province of Negros,” she said.

Innovation in the City of Smiles

This year, the City of Bacolod signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with GCash to welcome digitalization in the province, making it easier and more convenient to pay government fees for its people. The joint venture amplifies the city’s readiness to embrace digitalization and harness its full potential and benefits.

“Business leaders are the engines of economic prosperity, creators of employment opportunities, and the pioneers of technological breakthroughs,” said Patrick Mabag, the president of the Rotary Council of Presidents. “As we confront the disruptions brought by technological advancements, shifting consumer behaviors, and an increasingly interconnected global economy, our ability to adapt and innovate is paramount.”

INNOVATION. Patrick Mabag, the President of the Rotary Council of Presidents

Meanwhile, the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) held the Digital Careers Expo 2023 events in the northern part of Negros Occidental, helping LGUs to create a digital road map for each district to boost provincial overall growth that will cover until 2030.

In addition, Colliers International Philippines report says Bacolod is one of the top business hubs for BPO services outside Metro Manila because it’s a competitive city that is highly urbanized and has diversified economic growth drivers.

“Bacolod City has been on the rise, being the fourth-largest economy outside NCR. Thanks to the ever-supportive government and the movers and shakers of this city, Bacolod is indeed growing by leaps and bounds,” said Jose Adolfo Cornelio, Jr., ITG’s managing director for PH.

Venturing in Digital Evolution

At the heart of the conversation, Rubie Grace Villamor, ITG’s head of Business Management Solutions, talked about the importance of “Compliance Towards Sustainable Business.”

“The shift towards a sustainability mindset has been revolutionary and is changing the business and investment landscape,” she said. “A sustainable business is a compliant and profitable business. It’s the way to the future and our way to stay competitive and relevant.”

Ms. Villamor showed the bigger picture of how sustainability creates a ripple effect of positive change on businesses from environmental to economical to social to corporate governance standpoint, bringing Oracle NetSuite, ITG’s trusted technological partner, as a tool and strategic solution to run a sustainable and profitable business.

BUSINESS TALK. (L-R) ITG’s Head of Business Management Solutions Rubie Grace Villamor; President of Southland Colleges of Kabankalan and District Secretary of Rotary International District 3850 Juan Antonio Villaluz; President of Rural Bank of Sagay and Charter President of the Rotary Club of Sagay-Sinigayan Alex Yupangco; and ITG’s Head of IT Management Solutions Rommel Bernabe

She shared how Oracle NetSuite can help Bacolod’s businesses champion sustainability and visibility on their operational and financial data while maintaining the integrity of records necessary for regulatory compliance like BIR Computer Accounting System and E-Invoicing.

At the same time, Rommel Bernabe, ITG’s head of IT Management Solutions, delved into digital transformation, highlighting cybersecurity as a critical aspect of modernization that protects organizations’ digital assets, intellectual property, and customer data.

“Cybersecurity holds a simple truth: we want to protect something important to us. We want it to be safe and secure. And that’s the core of what we do, providing IT security as you begin your digital transformation with us,” he said.

Home Sweet Home in Bacolod City

At the event, Mr. Cornelio sent his heartfelt message to all the attendees. “It’s a full circle moment for us, to be honest. IT Group, Inc. is part of the Hexagon Group of Companies, where our founder, Don Simplicio Gamboa, Sr., had his share of humble beginnings through his business, Bacolod Victory Hardware and now we are here with you through ITG, and it’s good to be back,” he said.

Mr. Mabag also urged everyone to be part of the digital transformation of Bacolod saying, “We must embrace the digital revolution, not as a threat, but as an opportunity to redefine our industries and unlock new frontiers of growth.”

FULL CIRCLE MOMENT. (L-R) Rotary Club of Sagay-Sinagayan Members: ITG’s Senior Business Development Officer and Club Director Ellirie Aviles; President of Rural Bank of Sagay and Club Charter President Alex Yupangco; Rotaract President Mariella Demanalata; Club President Abundio Tarrazona III; and Sagay City Local Government Executive Assistant IV and Club Immediate Past President Benson Fernandez

“It’s always been our goal to connect with like-minded people who are interested in innovating their businesses through technology, where everyone can be part of co-creating and co-owning better solutions not only for Bacolod but hopefully for the whole province of Negros,” Mr. Cornelio ended.

Over 2,200 homes to rise in Pampanga, Manila, Misamis Oriental, and Davao as Pag-IBIG approves funding for 4PH projects https://www.bworldonline.com/spotlight/2023/12/18/564150/over-2200-homes-to-rise-in-pampanga-manila-misamis-oriental-and-davao-as-pag-ibig-approves-funding-for-4ph-projects/ Mon, 18 Dec 2023 02:45:33 +0000 https://www.bworldonline.com/?p=564150 A total of 2,264 housing units are set to rise in Pampanga, Manila, Misamis Oriental, and Davao City as Pag-IBIG Fund approved a P929-million revolving credit line for the Social Housing Finance Corporation (SHFC) to fund housing projects under the government’s Pambansang Pabahay para sa Pilipino Housing or 4PH Program, Pag-IBIG Fund’s top officials announced last Dec. 15.

“I am happy to report that our key shelter agencies remain united in their mission of bringing opportunities for homeownership closer to our fellow Filipinos, especially the underserved. With Pag-IBIG Fund’s approval of a revolving credit line for the SHFC, we are now better equipped to provide our informal settler families (ISFs) with affordable housing in a safe environment under secured communities, which is what we envision under the 4PH Program of President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr.,” said Secretary Jose Rizalino L. Acuzar, who heads the Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development (DHSUD) and the 11-member Pag-IBIG Fund Board of Trustees.

Pag-IBIG Fund’s revolving credit line for the SHFC shall finance the construction of medium and high-rise condominiums under the 4PH program consisting of 996 units in San Fernando City, Pampanga, 352 units in Tondo, Manila, 416 units in Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental and 500 units in Davao City. To ensure the proper and efficient use of funds, the revolving credit line contains safeguards which include the corresponding loan collaterals provided by the SHFC, a maximum payment term of three (3) years and provisions ensuring the release of funds for the intended projects.

Pag-IBIG Fund Chief Executive Officer Marilene C. Acosta, meanwhile, stated that Pag-IBIG Fund’s credit line for the SHFC is part of its commitment to the Marcos Administration’s efforts of addressing the housing backlog under the 4PH Program.

“Pag-IBIG stands as the single largest source of home financing in the country today, with a share of nearly 40% of the home mortgage market. We recognize our role in providing the financing for socialized housing projects so that these become more accessible and affordable for low-income earners. We are happy to partner with the SHFC under the Pambansang Pabahay para sa Pilipino or 4PH Program, so that our ISF communities will now have a better chance of owning quality homes in sustainable communities. Total care at the top: Dealing with head and neck cancers https://www.bworldonline.com/spotlight/2023/12/18/564147/total-care-at-the-top-dealing-with-head-and-neck-cancers/ Sun, 17 Dec 2023 16:15:06 +0000 https://www.bworldonline.com/?p=564147 Each organ of the body has a specific function to play in helping humans respond and adapt to their environment and thus in enabling a well-rounded lifestyle they can enjoy. At the top of the human body, the head, supported by the neck, houses the brain — which initiates and regulates communication with the rest of the body — as well as most of our sensory organs.

Like other organ systems, the head and neck are also prone to risk, and cancer is among them. According to head & neck surgeon and senior consultant Dr. Christopher Goh, head and neck cancer refers to a wide range of malignant tumors found in the neck and head region, which extends from the eyes to the neck base.

For this type of cancer, smoking, drinking, as well as viruses, poor oral hygiene and dental care are the most established causes of such illness. Symptoms include neck lumps, ulcers, voice changes, and ringing sounds in the ears.

With advancements in medicine constantly evolving, nonetheless, addressing head and neck cancer can be more durable and bearable. In most cases, cancer patients start with a diagnosis based on their symptoms; and if treatment is needed, patients must undergo an endoscopy, followed by treatments through surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, or a combination of these treatments.

Unlike other cancers, head and neck cancer is a bit more tricky. Dr. Goh says that it is not easily detectable since they are well-hidden in areas that are highly concealed like the rear of the nose, voice box, or the larynx.

However, there are some cancers of this type that can be detected early on, especially those with symptoms such as tongue cancers or ulcers, allowing for preventive measures to be taken.

According to Dr. Goh, head and neck cancer treatments have made a lot of progress in recent years. For instance, new types of chemotherapy and targeted therapy have been made available for patients. Also, reducing radiation damage and side effects is possible with proton beam therapy. Finally, endoscopic methods are being used to help reduce scarring and provide access to areas that are inaccessible.

Among hospitals specializing in cancer care, Mount Elizabeth Hospital is fully equipped to address head and neck cancer in a more convenient and holistic manner. One of the strongest cores of the hospital is its holistic medical care that ensures the best treatment, while also addressing the medical needs and providing an enhanced experience of privacy and comfort among patients.

“Mount Elizabeth Hospital has well-trained surgeons, radiation oncologists, and medical oncologists. In addition to the support team, which is important [for us in cancer care], Mount Elizabeth Hospital provides a good support team for patient care. In terms of technology, Mount Elizabeth Hospital is one of the few hospitals, the first hospital in Singapore [in fact], to have the proton beam ready or treatment and it will give the best results and the least side effects for patients,” Dr. Goh said in an interview with BusinessWorld.

In terms of protecting one’s self from potentially getting head or neck cancers, the key is to keeping a healthy lifestyle through a well-balanced diet, proper rest, exercise, and reduced smoking and drinking.
